...Alena discovered basalt mines in Northern Bohemia, where she enrolled in the High School of Applied Arts in Kamenicky Senov. There, with fifteen-year-old boys, she learned how to blow glass. That same year, she began combining glass with stone, which led to her installation in a basalt mine.
"Basalt, like glass, is of volcanic origin. Both materials are hard and fragile, they go together well and can support each other. The choice of material has no philosophical foundation for me. Material evokes feelings of comfort or discomfort in me. This is a question of senses," explains Alena. She even sniffs stones. "Ideas come to me at the moment when I am expecting them. They are such perfect visions that there is nothing left but to realize them - which is what I do. At the same time I draw inspiration from the space I like. I devote myself to such a space and wait to 'see'. At such moments time ceases to exist for me. So far, I have always seen what I needed. This vision is then followed by months of hard work."
This was the way that `Path in Gorlice' was conceived, the underground hall of the ancient fortress of Vypenrad. These existing works merged with the newly created ones forming a perfect whole. One goes through the middle of a basalt colonnade. Capitals of columns formed of goblets symbiotically filled with our deeds. At the beginning of the Path lie three royal crowns. If one can use these symbols of power and wealth without becoming bound by them, then two guards suspended by crystals will allow entrance. In this symbolic dwell in, one can draw strength from the universe's concentrated energy. Sensitive individuals can actually feel this energy Next, are the gates of two worlds. The first, can be entered, closing the epoch of ignorance. The second gate, Fifteen sheets of glass and a support structure of stone, reflects our lives and the milestones along the way. Closer to this border we all 'the other side'. Although, the Path was just a diploma project, it attracted a lot of publicity.
The two-weekly, magazine, Atelier published an extensive review. The prestigious Czech society journal Reflex featured the exhibition in a two-page article "Ten Tons of Art". The exhibition was also used as an interior for the TV program Epilogues. In addition to fine art, Alena Matejkova produces applied art, since, as she puts it, "she has to eat something." However, she does not compromise hen artistic expression. "I try to do things according to my consciousness, not in such a way, that would sell them well," says Alena. Her working method has attracted its followers. A testimony is provided by awards for her stone goblets from international competitions in Murano, Italy and Elbeltoft, Denmark.
"I love creative work. At the moment, I am fixing my old country house. If God lets me finish it one day, it will be my greatest work of art." "My latest exhibition, in the square tower of the church in Kamenice nad Lipou (Southern Bohemia), was called Four. This is the number of elements - Fire, Water, Air and Earth. The elements were represented as four transparent, smiling creatures which were modelled after my friends. I returned to more classical means of expression." "The tradition of Czech glass helps me in terms of the wide range of possible technologies and materials offered by the Czech glass industry, but, I do not subject myself to traditional procedures. Although I also melt, cut and paint glass, I do not try, to make a perfectly transparent mass of it. For me, glass is re-melted quartz and calcite, i.e. natural material which is not without a fault, so I treat it accordingly."
